The Best Damn Homemade Doughnuts in the World (which just happen to be vegan) Note: this is best done with two or more people, each with separate jobs. I'm sure you'll see what i mean once you read this. Ingredients and Preparation: 1. As many cans of Pillsbury "Buttermilk" Biscuits as you like - 1 can makes 10 doughtnuts (yes, it's hilarious that one of the only vegan brands of instant biscuits are called "buttermilk", but the last time we checked they were entirely animal-free.) 2. A deep fryer or a pan several inches deep (a deep fryer works best) 3. Vegetable Oil 4. Large Plastic Baggies 5. Any kind of topping for the doughnuts you want (we use three different ones: regular sugar, powdered sugar, and cinnamon sugar) 6. Brown paper bags (or paper towels, but brown paper bags are sturdier and using them for this is better than throwing them out after you go grocery shopping) 7. An empty pill bottle Pour the vegetable oil into the deep fryer and turn that on to get heated up. While it's doing that you can open the can of biscuits, separate them, and lay them on a counter. Take your empty pill bottle (with the lid off) and press it into the center of each biscuit. There should now be several doughnut looking pieces of dough and an equal number of dough balls (save these!!). While you were doing all that, someone else should have been filling each plastic bag with a different type of sugar. Ok, got all that prepared? Start by dropping a couple dough-rings or dough balls into the deep fryer (be careful! it's really easily to get splashed and burned). You're going to have to stand around and make sure these don't get overcooked. You want them to be a nice golden shade. Once you can see the bottom half of the doughnut is the desired color, flip them over with a large serving spoon (or the scoop that comes with the deep fryer) and wait for the other side to get golden. Once both sides are done remove them from the oil and set on paper bags to drain and cool. You can go back to frying more dough while your partner pays attention to the cooling doughnuts. Once they are cooled slightly (read, still warm, but not hot anymore), which should take about 2 or 3 minutes, they can be places into the sugar-filled bags and shaken. Make sure each doughnut gets coated thoroughly and don't shake too hard or you'll break the damn bag. Well, that's basically it. You just repeat those steps over and over until you've fried and coated each doughnut. Have fun.
